The Crown Imperial is a regal sight: a wreath of hanging bell-shaped flowers beneath a leafy crown, on a stem nearly a meter tall. Use them at the back of the border, as a specimen, and in large pots. The bulbs are size 18/20: the circumference of the bulb in centimeters. The larger the bulb, the more vigorous the bloom.

Characteristics

Botanical name: Fritillaria imperialis

Quantity: 3 bulbs

Bulb size: 18/20

Flowering period: April–May

Planting time: September through October

Planting depth: 20 cm

Plant spacing: approx. 30 cm (enough for a group of about 50 × 50 cm)

Location: sun

Hardiness: hardy

Pets: toxic to humans and animals

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs 20 cm deep with the tip facing up, in well-drained soil.
