Healthy growth & strong plants

Why do plants need nutrients?

Just like people, plants need nutrients to stay healthy. In nature, plants get these nutrients from the soil. In house plants, the available nutrients in potting soil run out over time. That is why it is important to regularly give your plants the right nutrients.

These nutrients support the development of green leaves, strong roots, and healthy growth. Especially with house plants, it is important to take their nutritional needs into account during the growing season. Some plants also need specific nutrients, for example during flowering or when they are developing new leaves.

  • Stimulates the development of strong and healthy roots
  • Supports the growth of new leaves and flowers
  • Helps prevent nutrient deficiencies in plants

The right nutrition for every plant

What types of plant food are there?

Not every plant has the same nutritional needs. That is why different types of plant food are available. Which food is best depends on the plant species, the growth stage, and the nutrients the plant needs.

Liquid plant food

Liquid plant food is easily mixed with water. The nutrients are quickly available to the roots, and this food is ideal for houseplants and potted plants.

Nutrient granules and fertilizers

Nutrient granules often release their nutrients gradually. They are especially suitable for garden plants, shrubs, and trees that need nutrients over a longer period.

Specialized plant food

Some plants benefit from tailored nutrition. Think of olive trees, palm trees, and flowering plants. With the right composition, you support their specific growth and development.

  • Liquid feed for easy dosing
  • Slow-release fertilizers for gradual feeding
  • Specialized feed tailored to different plant species

Frequently asked questions about plant nutrition

How often should I fertilize my plants?

Most houseplants need regular plant food during the growing season, from spring to autumn. With liquid plant food, this is often once every one to two weeks, depending on the plant and the product. In winter, many plants need less or no extra food at all. Always follow the dosage on the packaging.

When is the best time to give plants nutrients?

The best time to apply plant food is during the growing season, when plants are actively developing new leaves, roots, and flowers. This is usually from March through September. During the winter months, the growth of many plants slows down, and additional nutrients are often not necessary.

Can you give plants too much fertilizer?

Yes, too much plant food can be harmful. An excess of fertilizer can damage roots and cause brown leaf edges, yellowing, or growth problems. Therefore, never use more than the recommended amount and take your plant's needs into account.

Which plant food is best for houseplants?

For most green houseplants, liquid plant food is a good choice. It can be easily mixed with water, and the nutrients are quickly available. For flowering houseplants, orchids, and other specific types of plants, tailored plant food may be more suitable.

Should you fertilize your plants after repotting?

After potting, extra plant food is usually not immediately necessary. Fresh potting soil often already contains enough nutrients for the first few weeks. Depending on the potting soil used, you can start feeding after about four to six weeks. Check the instructions on the potting soil packaging for this.

Do olive trees and palm trees need special plant food?

Olive trees and palm trees can benefit from plant food tailored to their nutritional needs. Especially during the growing season, the right nutrients help develop healthy leaves and strong roots. Also check out our range of olive trees and palm trees for more inspiration.
